IELTS Preparation Guide steps

Steps in a nutshell

Step-1: Explore a Practice Test

Step-2: Imbibe the Test format

Step-3: Etch the timing limitations for each module

Step-4: Start improving your English skills

Step-5: Multi-task while listening

Step-6: Know the nuances of reading requirements

Step-7: Explore a preparatory course from experts for feedbacks

Step-1: Explore a Practice Test

For your IELTS preparations process, you should first take a practice test. With us, you can easily access your practice test here

This is a critical part in your initial preparation that will help establish where your strengths and weaknesses are. Not only is it necessary to improve on your weaknesses, but it is equally essential to build up on your strengths to create a solid foundation for the examination.

Most test-takers consider taking an IELTS preparations course, one of the easiest ways to approach the test, as it focuses solely on getting you exam-ready for IELTS.

Step-2: Imbibe the Test format

After identifying your strengths and areas of improvement in your IELTS practice test that is detailed in Step-1, you should start practicing. You should build a structured plan for your improvement and familiarise yourself with the questions asked, the types of questions for each section of every module.

The key to your success in any examination and not just IELTS is a clear familiarity with the test pattern and format.

Step-3: Etch the timing limitations for each module

  • A clear understanding of the test structure is imperative to succeed in any examination, not just IELTS. When you are familiar with this, your chances of completing the test successfully, within the allotted time, increases manifold.

As detailed in Step-1, an IELTS Preparations course should provide you a deep orientation to every small aspect of the modules to keep in you good stead for your success.

Remember the IELTS test has a time limit and you will only have the time given for each module.

All preparation done in classes of a preparation course, are conducted under the same timed conditions as the exam, so you’re ready for the pace of the IELTS test.

Step-4: Start improving your English skills

Majority of our students land up after doing a lot of practice test and taking the test but failing to secure their desired score in IELTS. The reason is that they focussed only on IELTS but they forgot to improve their English language skills

Most IELTS learners are unaware of their current English level, and do not consider or forget that IELTS is an English proficiency test. As such, your English is expected to be top notch.

Keep in mind that learning IELTS is a process. On average it takes 8-12 weeks to move up the score band.

Start preparing for your test at least 3 – 4 months prior. We highly recommend our course which will help you with English development and IELTS strategies.

Step-5: Multi-task while listening

IELTS test is demanding and the listening module is no different. Since the recordings are played only once and you will have to answer 40 questions throughout the 4 recordings, students often get lost during the conversations that are played.

How to follow the conversation and in case you have missed something how you can recover to continue answering the next set of questions is by building skills of multi-tasking while listening. You should make it a point to note every important conversation that happens around you in real-life and that is an essential practice that students’ need to cultivate.

Step-6: Know the nuances of Reading requirements

The sole purpose of the reading module is to test a wide range of reading skills. Reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, and recognising writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.

Test takers have to provide short answers, match information, complete sentences, match headings or complete diagram labels.

Ensure you practice includes a wide variety of questions so that you become accustomed to each type.

Timing is of the essence in the reading module and you simply will not have the time to go through the texts several times. There are strategies to help you to avoid this situation. For example, how to skim the text and what kind of information you need to focus on.

Step-7: Explore a preparation course from experts

It is very important to seek experts’ feedbacks for your practices. Courses such as Engram’s IELTS course provides you 1-to-1 training and brings about a structured approach for your IELTS preparations
