The Model Answer

Having collected all the inputs and an broad idea about the opening paragraph, we will now look at the model answer for this IELTS Academic Writing Task-2 question

In recent times, pet related injuries and mortalities have sparked heated debates about whether it is healthy for children to be around pets. On the contrary, strong opinions are portrayed highlighting the substantive psychological benefits of having pets.

To begin with, although exotic pets such as snakes, spiders, apes, etcetra, have been known to occasionally hurt and even kill children, such incidents are being reported more often, which clearly demonstrates that human kind is moving towards domesticating even wild animals and bring about a disruption to the ecological chain defying the theory of evolution.

For example, The Child Safety Institute survey states that any animal when it is first introduced to a child invokes a mental shock in the child, which makes them behave weirdly until the kid is habituated to these pets to be co-living with them. Seen in this light, it indicates that children could be in a mental shock in their early days.

Secondly, pets though can impact positively upon child’s psychology because, the pet owners frequently empathise with their pets, it leaves the owners as well as the child shattered when the pet dies.

With the average life span of most of the pets being lesser than that of human beings, these incidents results into a mental trauma which outweighs the positives of empathy towards living beings.

In conclusion, the cited reasons provides strong support for the view that pets can be dangerous and unhealthy for children. Growing of pets should be limited to certain type of pets and mentally matured pet owners who can counsel children adequately along with strong laws to ban ownership of illegally acquired exotic pet.
